The 1826 building that stands proudly at 120 St George’s Street is fondly called Patel’s by the locals, a superette has been an iconic part of Simon’s Town’s main road since 1985. This building has a rich history that tells the story of an immigrant family of colour struggling to make their way in Apartheid South Africa. It was sold to the Patel family by the Simon’s Town Council, who gave brothers Natver and Chotu Patel, together with their wives Manjula and Padma, special permission to purchase the property as it was illegal for people of Indian heritage to own property under Group Areas Act in South Africa at the time.
The Patel Family turned the iconic storefront into an integral part of the Simon’s Town community, with the shop becoming a regular stop for residents from when it opened its doors in 1985 to when the owners retired in 2010. Since then, the building has been rented out to retail tenants, most recently as the home of Submarina Café. With this iconic chapter of Simon’s Town story coming to a close, the Patel family’s living descendants are looking for new owners to continue the building’s rich legacy. They have entrusted the sale of 120 St George’s Street to Galetti Corporate Real Estate, where it will go on auction at in Cape Town on 12 March 2024.
